Scenes from Bishkek, capitol of Kyrgyzstan
The Soviets built major developments of apartments surrounding courtyards or play areas. After the fall of the USSR, there is very little money for maintenance and therefore many of the buildings are in much disrepair. However, many tenants have remodeled their own units, thus always surprising us how new and contemporary someone's apt is on the inside compared to the crumbling exterior.

The Gingerbread House Project
This is what happens when you get a Gingerbread house in the mail from the U.S. Building it was disastrously fun. We managed to salvage the cardboard box to cut out the photo since we thought it would make an interesting project piece...
You'll notice a traditional Kyrgyz yurt in the background of one photo and Lenin in the back of another.

Pictures from Lake Issyk-Kul
Here are some pics from our visit to Lake Issyk-kul in northern Kyrgyzstan. It is the largest lake in the country and is a very popular vacation destination in the summer. After being in one of the most landlocked countries in the world, it was wonderful to see so much water! We spent three days at a conference on the Lake and then went to visit another PCV in a nearby town. He is a teacher a large elementary school...and he has a good sense of humor
