The Soviets built major developments of apartments surrounding courtyards or play areas. After the fall of the USSR, there is very little money for maintenance and therefore many of the buildings are in much disrepair. However, many tenants have remodeled their own units, thus always surprising us how new and contemporary someone's apt is on the inside compared to the crumbling exterior.
